May 18: Pirates outright LHP to Triple-A Indianapolis
Fleming, 28, signed a split-contract with the Pirates this spring and earned a spot on the Opening Day roster, where he saw initial success as a ground ball and lefty specialist. However, a six-run outing on May 13 raised his ERA from 3.50 to 5.68, and the Pirates designated him for assignment on May 14 to get a fresh reliever into their bullpen. Fleming is 20-14 with a 4.94 ERA over his five-year Major League career, most of which he has spent as a reliever.

May 16: Pirates trade RHP to Angels for cash considerations
Contreras was considered one of the Pirates' more promising pitchers as recently as last year, but a dip in fastball velocity and control eventually led to him losing his rotation spot, and eventually, a spot on the team. He entered Spring Training with a chance to earn a starting job, but ended up in the bullpen where he pitched to a 4.41 ERA over 16 1/3 innings.

He was designated for assignment Saturday to make room on the roster for Paul Skenes.
